Barbara Skubic is a Slovenian writer and translator. She graduated from the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (University of Ljubljana) and obtained a masters in sociology at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the same university. She began learning Arabic while living in Cairo in the 1990s and she has worked as a freelance translator from Arabic and English into Slovenian since 2000. She regularly works with educators and publishers who wish to incorporate more contemporary Arabic literature into their programmes. Her interests in sociology focus on gender and migration; she contributed a chapter to From Slovenia to Egypt: Aleksandrinke's Trans-Mediterranean Domestic Workers' Migration and National Imagination (2015), an academic book about the migration of Slovenian women to Egypt between 1856 and 1939. She has translated Arabic novels, short stories and poetry, but is still looking for the perfect play to introduce Arabic theatre to Slovenian audience. When she doesn't translate, she writes.
