There are no cemeteries in Zahraniya, as the novel's protagonist discovers one day after 20 years of living there. In 180 Sunsets (Dar Al-Saqi, Beirut, 2009), Lebanese author Hassan Daoud takes the Arabic novel in a new direction by focusing on details which are normally overlooked or ignored. Daoud's descriptive and contemplative prose quietly delves into its subject, but the patient reader will soon discover the heated emotions and simmering violence beneath the 'objective' surface.

About the author
Hassan Daoud is a Lebanese novelist and journalist, born in Beirut in 1950. As a journalist, he has worked on various Lebanese newspapers including al-Safeer and al-Hayat and he currently manages the Nawafez supplement of al-Mustaqbal newspaper. He has also published two short story collections – Under Angie's Balcony and The Angel's Holiday – and is the author of several novels, some of which have been translated into English, French, German and Italian.
