The novel tells the story of the Palestinian Arab volunteers during the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), men of high calibre who have been forgotten by history and the record of their deeds lost. Forty thousand foreign volunteers from 56 countries fought in the war. They were called the international volunteers fighting in the "International Brigades". Among these were five Palestinians, dedicated to the cause of freedom and justice. During the course of the novel, Ali, our hero, becomes an important military commander.

About the author
Hussein Yassin is a Palestinian writer, born in the village of 'Arrabat al-Battuf in northern Galilee in 1943. In 1973 and 1976 respectively, he obtained degrees in Economics and Accounting from Leningrad and Haifa Universities, as well as a qualification in Insurance from Tel Aviv College in 1993. His working life was spent in accountancy, in an insurance company in Ramallah and a Palestinian research centre. He is the author of three novels: Lanterns of Gloom (2006); Duha (2012) and Ali, the Story of an Honourable Man (2017).
